Chiropractic FAQs

What exactly is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a form of health care that, to me, is more preventative. A lot of people use it for pain relief. I don't use it for pain relief. I think that is a side effect of Chiropractic. To me, Chiropractic is restoring health, making the body work 100%, and the side effect of Chiropractic is pain relief, which is great. We want to get people out of pain, however I do not think that Chiropractic is strictly for pain. I think it is optimizing a human's body and making it work at 100%.

What is Chiropractic an alternative to?

Chiropractic is an alternative for surgery or medicine. I think Chiropractic has its own standard, its own way of living. As far as pain relief, yes it is definitely an alternative to injections or surgery. But that is a side effect of Chiropractic. Getting rid of pain, yes. It's getting people 100% healed and working at their best.

What makes Chiropractic a better choice than those alternatives?

The side effects for one. A lot of time, medications are band aids. They cover up a symptom. They are not getting to the problem, what's caused the symptom. We don't want to treat just symptoms with Chiropractic. We want to get to the root of the problem. Fix the root.

Is Chiropractic an immediate cure?

Chiropractic is not an immediate cure. Will your symptoms go away pretty abruptly. Very possible. To make sure it doesn't come back I recommend a prolonged approach of maintaining health. I personally get adjusted once a month. Knock on wood, I have no pains whatsoever. But once a month for me is making me work optimally. So, I don't think it is an immediate cure. If you want to just get rid of your pain, it could be immediate - one or two visits. But there are a lot of times that the problem won't go away for at least 10 to 15 visits.

How do you keep symptoms and conditions from coming back?

It is education. Education is very important. Each time a person comes in, not only am I asking how they are doing, I'm also giving different educational things that will help them prolong their health. Different nutritional information. Postural information. Exercise information. That's an everyday visit thing. I'm going to give tips. Health facts. And if someone does obviously have any questions, I am going to try to answer that as best as possible. I am a health care expert.

Chiropractic is not sick care medicine. It is health care. Health care is prolonged health, not just treating symptoms.

Is Chiropractic treatment something that must be continued forever?

Personally, that's what I do for myself and I do it for my family. I recommend it. I'm not going to force feed it down anyone's throat. Again, it's all about education. I would recommend that after the initial problem is fixed, that you do once a month. To me, going to the dentist every six months, and brushing and flossing every day is a vital part of your teeth health. What do we do for our spine? We need to clean up our spine on a daily basis or a weekly basis. That's something that we don't do really on our own. So I think getting adjusted once a month is something everyone should do for the rest of their lives.

What makes Dey Street Chiropractic different or special?

No Wait for Patients - Doctor On Schedule
Being in the city, I know that people don't have a lot of time, so there is no waiting for my patients. Which I also think makes it extra special.

Is Chiropractic treatment something that must be continued forever?

Personally, that's what I do for myself and I do it for my family. I would recommend that after the initial problem is fixed, that you return for treatment once a month. Just as periodic visits to the dentist and daily oral hygiene is a vital part of your teeth health, periodic Chiropractic visits are vital to our skeletal health. Chiropractic is something we really can’t do on our own, so getting adjusted once a month is something everyone should do.

Has Insurance Changed How Patients Get Served?

Not At Dey Street Chiropractic. With the change in insurance, some doctors push as many patients through as they can in a short amount of time, and frequently over-book. It's a shame.
because in this day and age insurances have changed dramatically. Some pay a good amount. Some pay a lot less. I do right by everybody. You know, without those people, the working people, the world would not go round. That's why they deserve the exact same care as someone that has really good insurance.
I always look at my patients as how I would want to be treated, or my family would be treated. That has gotten me very busy - my practice. I treat people the way I want to be treated. I don't think a lot of doctors do that these days.

You have a personal reason for having become a Chiropractor. What is it?

When I was 17, I was in a car accident. Fortunately it wasn’t very serious, but at the time I had no idea what Chiropractic was. I started going to see this Chiropractor, and he smiled every day. He was so in love with his practice, treating people and making people feel better. He was really passionate about that. I decided that I wanted to smile every day, and I think I made a great choice. I get to smile every day and my life is amazing because I get to make other people's lives better.

Why did you start Dey Street Chiropractic?

When I first graduated from Chiropractic College, I joined another practice in lower Manhattan. I was doing my part, but the other people that were part of this practice I think were treating it like a mill. That bothered my conscience, I wanted better treatment for my patients. That's why I decided to go out on my own.

What kinds of people do you treat at Dey Street Chiropractic?

We treat all types of patients at Dey Street Chiropractic. I've been down here in the New York City financial district for thirteen years.
Most of my patients are working people. Executives, executive assistants, traders, weekend warriors, but the last few years down here it is more family oriented. So a lot of families involve children, older people, A lot of weekend warrior stuff. A lot of golfers. A lot of runners. A mix of people.

Many of my patients are business people have time constraints. But my practice is not strictly business people. Years ago my practice was 90% business people. Now, 70% of my practice are business people, but 30% are families within the area.

Where do those people come from?

A lot of my patients are self referrals. I've been down here for 13 years. I get a lot of patients referred to me by the doctors in the area. Medical doctors and orthopedic surgeons send me a lot of patients because I've been down here for so long and I've got a great reputation. Mostly, just word of mouth.

I get patients from all walks of life. Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan. A lot of people from all different counties that are working part time or full time down here in the financial district. Some from Upper Manhattan, Lower Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island. I get all regions. All the boroughs.

Combatting The Sedentary Lifestyle

When your nervous system is working 100%, injuries will minimize. Obviously, if someone falls or gets hit in a sports related incident or an accident, that's a different story. But, normal wear and tear, we live in a sedentary life style working 8 hours a day. A lot of people are sitting for 8 or 9 hours a day. Some people are just standing 9 hours a day. We as people should be ... there's not a sedentary aspect of that. We should optimize our bodies and by being sedentary we're causing fatigue and posture issues and that's what Chiropractic is going to prevent. It's going to prevent is wear and tear injuries or postural injuries.

Someone's posture takes shape. It's hard to revert back to normal position. So when people are sitting for 8 hours a day, and their shoulders are rounded, their head is pushed out, a lot of stress is put on the spine and the nervous system, and the muscles. So what happens is I don't know if you've ever seen some older people walking down the street and they are hunched over. They were not always like that. They started sitting down and their posture not as good. So I feel that when we get adjusted on a monthly basis, our bodies are going to revert back to their normal position and then stay that way. So, by sitting and our posture being not as good, arthritis sets in, fatigue sets in, and lack of mobility sets in.

What causes lower back pain?

Lower back pain is the most common condition seen. In milder cases, it can be a related to a bulging or herniated disc. In more severe cases, it can progress to a condition called sciatica that affects an entire leg.

What is Sciatica?

Symptoms of Sciatica can include shooting pain in the front or the back of the legs. Sciatica can also go down into the feet and cause a numbness and tingling in the toes. Sciatica may also cause some cramping and heat sensations in the calves or the thighs.
Sciatica is a term used to refer to one of several conditions more accurately known as radiculopathy. The sciatic nerve is only one nerve of several that may be causing these symptoms. It's not necessarily the one that's going to cause all the pain.
We need to focus on the different nerves that really are causing the problem.

What causes central back pain? Can central back issues cause pain in the mid-section?

Problems in the mid back frequently come from the thoracic spine region. If there's a problem there, the nerve that wraps around the front gets inflamed. The rib itself can act up and hurt. I've had patients that thought they were having a heart attack when actually it ended up being related to the mid back, which caused a shooting pain to the front.

We readjust the thoracic spine in the mid-back region and also the rib itself. This decreases the inflammation which will help reduce pain to the front as well.

What causes neck pain?

A number of things. Posture being one. Wear and tear being another. Could be any type of whiplash or sports related injury.

What is the treatment for neck pain?

Neck pain is not just cut and dry, depending upon where the neck problem is, a treatment is recommended. It could be muscle work. It could be the adjustment. It could be a combination of both. Some acupuncture. Physical Therapy. It could be imbalances, which then physical therapy is very vital. It could be a lack of strength which is important for overall posture.

What causes tingling in the fingers?

Tingling in the fingers could be caused by a number of different issues. If neck nerves are compressed, tingling could radiate into the hands, but we have to distinguish that it is not carpal tunnel. The problem could even be coming from the elbow.
Before treatment, we need to make a correct diagnosis and treat the underlying issue, not the symptom.
For instance, if the issue is with the wrist, and it's a lack of strength which is causing carpal tunnel, or adhesions, we're going to perform some muscle work. The adhesions need to be broken up in the wrist, and a massage therapist is the best to do that. In addition, we will perform adjustment of the wrist, and the neck as well. And to increase strength in the wrist to prevent relapse, a physical therapist will provide some therapy as well.

What are the causes of elbow pain? What are the treatments for elbow pain?

There are two common problems for the elbow. There is golfer's elbow and there is tennis elbow. They are two different things.
Golfer's elbow is on the inside of the elbow. Tennis elbow is on the outside of the elbow.
Usually there is wear and tear, or overuse, and there's a weakness on the opposite side of that pain. First we need to do is get rid of the inflammation, and the tightness and overuse on the one side, and strengthen the opposite side, which that will help balance out the problem.

What Other leg issues treated at Dey Street Chiropractic?

We treat a multitude of leg injuries, depending upon what the injury is. We frequently treat leg issues related to the knee, and ankle. We also treat hamstring strains or sprains and calf sprains or strains.
A lot of times, if it is a muscle issue in the hamstring, we work on the hips with adjustment, but also treat with massage to loosen up the tight muscle that's causing this issue.

Treatment of bunions.

If a bunion is still treatable, if it's not causing severe pain, and it's not sticking out that much. Obviously I would want to send them to a podiatrist at that point. However, when it first starts, we can definitely ease the inflammation in the area, and get the muscles to get balanced out, which helps people's gait, and their walking better which is really causing the bunion itself. So we affect the gait with the hips, the knees, and the ankles. It's going to help that bunion because a lot of times people are walking wrong, which is causing that bunion.

So, treatment would slow the progress of that bunion.

What happens on the first visit?

On the patient's first visit, they are going to fill out a few forms. Basic information regarding their past medical history, some of their insurance, and their basic info. I'm going to be seeing them for a consultation. Depending on what they are coming in for, I'm going to figure out what the issue is. I'm going to let the patient know what the issue is, and what my goal of treatment is. And sometimes I don't recommend physical therapy. Sometimes I don't recommend massage therapy. But, again, it all depends on each individual's problem and their reason for treatment.

I come up with a plan for each individual patient to fit in with their needs. Their schedule I try not to look at too much. I let people know what the issue is and how to fix it. They have to come up with a plan as far as their schedule, because to me health is the most important thing. I know New York City is crazy. We have work. We have family, We have this, We have that. I let them know we need this amount of treatment to get this fixed. We are very accommodating with our schedule to fit their schedule.

We have extended hours to accommodate people's schedules. I'm open until 11:00 to 7:30pm during the week - Monday, Wednesday, Thursday & Friday. A lot of people do get out at 5 or 6 o'clock, so they have enough time to get treatment in before they go home.

What happens once a patient feels better?

Once a patient feels better, which could be as soon as one or two visits, I recommend continued treatment until the underlying issue is corrected. Then I recommend periodic maintenance.
I don't want to patch something up and then two weeks it comes back with a vengeance. I've seen that happen. I let patients know that a lot of times the symptoms go away in one or two visits, but the key is health. How long the treatment will take to get ultimate healing depends on how long this problem was there to begin with.

So it's more than just relief. It's an eye toward healing, preventing it from recurring?

We don’t want the problem to come back in two months. My goal is for the problem and the symptoms to not come back. That's why I let my patients know what the full course of treatment will be to remedy the issue, and not just to patch it up.

Is Chiropractic affordable?

It is affordable and a lot of times insurance covers it very well. Maybe just a co-pay and that's about it.
If people don't have insurance, there are payment plans.
Wellness Care at Dey Street Chiropractic is relatively inexpensive compared to other medical professions, and I work with patients to fit their budgets. The financial aspect should not be a huge issue preventing someone from getting the care they need. If someone really needs my help, and they can't afford it, I will work with them.
